Preserving dignity is central to hospice care. From respecting personal choices to ensuring patients feel valued, hospice care is designed to restore and maintain the sense of self-worth that illness might erode. By prioritizing dignity, we help patients face their journeys with grace, fostering a supportive and empowering environment that honors life at every stage.
Hope can be defined as the belief and expectation that, even in the absence of a cure, meaningful and positive experiences are still possible. This form of hope emphasizes the importance of emotional well-being, pain management, and the fulfillment of personal and relationship goals, ensuring that life remains rich and dignified, despite the limitations of illness.
Hospice care is available wherever the patient considers home, whether that’s a private residence, nursing home, assisted living community, or long-term care setting. Members of the hospice team will visit the patient according to their individualized care plan. These visits can occur daily, several times a week, weekly, or as needed based on the patient’s requirement.
Respite care is a level of hospice care designed to provide short-term relief for family caregivers. It allows caregivers to take a break while ensuring that the patient continues to receive care. This level of care allows caregivers to rest and recharge, knowing their loved one is in good hands. Respite care is typically covered as a hospice benefit for up to five days at a time.
General Inpatient (GIP) care is a level of hospice care provided to patients who need short-term inpatient care for symptom management that cannot be managed in other. Is usually covered under the hospice benefit until symptoms are managed
Continuous Care (CC) is a specialized level of care designed for patients who are experiencing severe symptoms that require constant monitoring and intervention. CC is provided in the patient home setting and involves at least eight hours of nursing care per day. CC is usually covered under the hospice benefit until symptoms are controlled.

Compassion and empathy are powerful forces in hospice care. They go beyond just administering medication or providing physical support—it’s about forming a deep human connection with patients, understanding their fears, and bringing comfort and peace to their hearts.
For instance, we had the honor of caring for a patient who was in the final stages of her illness and felt frightened and anxious. Our team spent time with her, listening to her stories, holding her hand, and simply being present. When we learned of her love for jazz music, we arranged for a small speaker to play her favorite pieces. This simple act brought a noticeable change in her demeanor; she became more relaxed and smiled more often. Her family also felt more at ease, knowing she was comforted.
Hospice is a benefit that is covered by Medicare. For those who do not qualify for Medicare, Highland Hospice accepts most insurance plans. We look at every situation individually and support you in making the right financial decisions related to your care, or that of a loved one.
